Icelandic sheep

We were initially very attracted to this primitive, unimproved breed of sheep for numerous reasons, but primarily for their exotic fleece, dairy capabilities, low maintenance requirements, and their fantastic ability to help us control noxious weeds without chemicals. Icelandic sheep are a medium sized, hardy breed brought to Iceland on the boats of the Vikings around 1100 years ago. They are most notably characterized by a long excellent fleece and an ability to thrive on grass and browse alone, both qualities resulting from the harsh conditions on Iceland. Icelandic fleece has an inner and outer layer with the fine undercoat being called Thel and the long, coarser outercoat called Tog. The fleeces are not very greasy and come in a variety of natural colors. Due to the length of fiber, the openness of the wool, the natural colors and the versatility, fleeces are usually sold through specialty markets to handspinners. We will offer this quality fleece for sale in many forms, including lamb’s wool. Please contact us for availability or to reserve a specific sheep’s fleece.

The breed has both polled and horned individual of both sexes but it is primarily horned. Icelandic sheep are not particularly tall, but are broad and have excellent conformation as a meat breed, which is their primary use in Iceland today. Icelandic sheep are a mountain breed, which historically have been milder in flavor and leaner than lowland sheep breeds.  Their meat is very tender with a mild flavor, and is generally considered gourmet meat. On good grass, meat lambs do not require finishing with grain and can be processed directly off free range pasture at 5-6 months of age. Mature ewes weigh 150-160 lbs. and rams 200-220 lbs. They are fine boned with open face and legs and udders and naturally short tails. Many ewes are fine milk producers, commonly raising twins and even triplets without trouble. We plan on blending our sheep and goat milk to craft fine artisan chesses.
